Training

Smart Start of Transylvania County is dedicated to the continuing education of local early childhood professionals working in both licensed and unlicensed settings.

2020 drastically altered the way we all work and live, and that extends to the way that child care professionals access training opportunities that support resilience in educators, children and families. We at Smart Start of Transylvania County are happy to be able to provide details of our Resiliency Plan for the 2020-2021 year (previously known as the annual ‘Training Plan’).

In striving to provide early educators with the best training tools to maintain licensing requirements and improve teaching skills, we recognize that online instruction is increasingly relied upon and that we need to provide centers and educators with training options that meet their individual needs at any education or career level, whether they work in licensed or unlicensed child care centers.
We have shifted the way we offer and support professional development opportunities to Transylvania County early childhood educators to make your access to top notch resources (including coursework required for licensing purposes) simpler, more flexible, and more affordable.
SSTC is pleased to offer multiple opportunities to you and your staff.  Each childcare center may take advantage of all three offerings:
  • One Standard membership to NAEYC for your center
  • NAEYC Standard membership ensures you're fully equipped as a professional, with the latest resources, events, research, discounts, and more.  The membership is valid for one year from the registration date.
  • Note: this is only one membership to be signed up under one name, but can be used to the advantage of your entire staff. SSTC will enroll and pay NAEYC directly for your identified staff member, in whose name the account will exist.

  • Two Individual memberships to Southwestern Child Development Commission (SWCDC)
  • Access to all self-paced/on-demand events- Over 60 courses. Over 200+ hours of course content. Content is relevant for all age groups including infant/toddler, preschool, school age and family child care homes. All courses are approved by the NC Division of Child Development and Early Education. Membership is valid through June 30, 2021.
  • SSTC will enroll and pay SWCDC directly for the two identified staff member recipients.

  • A stipend of $300 to be used for either:
  • A la carte courses through SWCDC for staff not covered through the two individual memberships.
  • Other needed courses (such as CPR, ITS/SIDS, etc) offered through your provider of choice.
  • NOTE: You may use a combination of SWCDC and other training providers, but SSTC will only reimburse up to $300 total. This stipend is the only one of the three opportunities being offered that your center will pay for and request reimbursement from SSTC.  Reimbursement requests will only be accepted once per month per child care center. Proof of completion of course(s) and evidence of payment is also required to receive reimbursement.

By creating an account at ssic.org, educators can complete online courses at Sesame Street in Communities for DCDEE credits.

All courses are free!

Under the Professional Development tab are Courses and Interactive Trainings.  Each of these courses can be completed for 3 Contact Hour Credits.  Just print the certificate of completion when you finish the course, and add it to your portfolio of other DCDEE credits earned.  Not all course options are available at the same time. Visit Sesame Street In Communities to learn which courses are currently available.
